Full House Literary / Voyages by Jessica Jemalem Ginting

“Voyages by Jessica Jemalem Ginting is a riveting collection of poetry that juxtaposes the concrete with the in-flux. Ginting places heavy emphasis on the transient nature of history on both a macro and micro level whilst placing relevance on the emotions and consequences associated with choices that impact humanity and its existence beyond the confines of the present. Ginting dissects the spatial and temporal dimensions of humanity through a surrealist lens that takes the reader on a narrative journey most spectacular.”

Interstellar Flight Mag / Un Bon Voyage: Jessica Jemalem Ginting’s poetic Voyages

Published by Bottlecap Press, 2021

Influenced by speculative writing, Voyages is a collection that follows the Earth and its inhabitants through various stages of transformation. Time, people, stories and places continuously evolve and morph, taking new forms. Science turns into dreams, then into a themed party at the apocalypse. Love turns into grief, then it turns people into salt. Humans, angels, animals are all made and unmade.

The poems in this collection combines portraits of the afterlife, idyllic realities, even ones fragmented at the seams, and lucid visions of the future.

Interview: Jessica Jemalem Ginting (buah zine)

Q: Tell me more about your journey into writing. What got you interested? How did you know that it was something you wanted to do as an adult?

I’ve always loved writing; I think because it went hand-in-hand with my overactive imagination and the need to put it all down somewhere—I think, it’s interesting what happens when you produce a piece of art (whether it be a portrait, or a page of poetry) because suddenly, it’s no longer attached to you. It exists outside of you, and then there’s this fun new dynamic of you interacting with your own creation. You get to approach it as an outsider who is still connected to it, in an intimate way. Maybe I just want to have as many relationships as I can, including with my own creations.

ROSANA!

ROSANA!

In a universe where a quarter of the Earth's population left on a voyage to space, treaties were signed and restrictions were put in place to encourage people to live more insular lives within their communities.

Our story begins when Rosana's island, Pulau Ndana, is visited by a government pilot—the first outsider in decades. The unexpected visit forces our superheroine to learn about the world outside and embark on a mission that will uncover the secrets of the past.
